If you had to tell 27 Tanzanian colleagues what they need to know in order to work better with expatriates from all over the world, what would you tell them? I just finished two weeks of Employee Orientation in the Mbeya-Iringa Cluster Project and it was a blast. This video highlights some of the activities we did in the team-building sessions. I can’t thank the staff there enough for their...

Goodbye Ruth.
Ranette and I are very privileged to serve in the unique ministry of language development and Bible translation. It’s an amazing life and we get to share it with a lot of amazing people. Every day, we are reminded how much we depend on others and that support comes from a very large team of people both here on the field as well as back in Canada and the US. There are 13 churches across...

A trip like no other.
I’ve made the trip from Mbeya to Dar es Salaam too many times to count but last Thursday it was like I did it for the first time ever. This time I did it on my motorcycle! What an incredible experience. The purpose of the trip was even more exciting though… to attend the dedication of Jonah, Ruth, Mark, 1&2 Timothy, Titus, and Philemon for the Sangu language community. The Sangu...

Canada: Playing the Visa Lottery
Two weeks ago I was devastated when my good friend, Pastor Waynse was denied a temporary visa to visit Canada with me. The purpose of the journey was for Waynse to give some of his partners in British Columbia a first hand account of bringing God’s Word to his language community: the Simbiti people of northern Tanzania. In 2009 I was able to take another friend from southern Tanzania to...

Christmas in Dar es Salaam and Paje with “Let It Snow” by Dean Martin. For those of you feeling sorry for us because it just doesn’t feel like Christmas in the tropics, this should remind you that it’s all a matter of perspective.

GOD-LOVING LINGUISTS | More Intelligent Life →
The Economist’s Laura Spinney writes about SIL International’s role in publishing and editing the Ethnologue, a catalogue of the world’s languages. She writes, “With thousands of languages still undocumented, many of which are in danger of dying before they are written down, it looks as though these emissaries of faith will continue to find plenty of work to keep them...

It's not looking a lot like Christmas!
I can’t tell you how much it does NOT feel like Christmas here. So last week, in a desperate attempt to get into the Christmas spirit, I put on some Perry Como. Now imagine this… the front doors are wide open onto the veranda, outside there’s barely a breeze so the palm trees are standing absolutely still, the celing fan pointlessly whirs away as it only stirs the 32°C air laiden...

My take on 2010: Stuff It!
Imagine this: you’re given a shopping list, then you’re fired out of a canon through a market, and when you land on the other side, you’re supposed to have picked up everything on the list. That’s how I feel when I look back at 2010 and assess whether or not I accomplished my goals for the year! I think 2010 just might have been one of the quickest years I’ve experienced in my whole life! Now...

Cross-cultural Training
Cross cultural training. What’s the first thing you think of when you hear that? I’ll dare to suggest that in the context of missions, for many, it conjures up thoughts of westerners sitting in a classroom being taught about foreign cultures in far-off places where they may eventually be heading to do some sort of ministry or relief work. The main idea behind such training is that...

5 More New Testament books dedicated in the Kinga...
On September 18 we traveled as a family from Dar es Salaam to Makete District in southern Tanzania to be a part of the celebrations being held by the Kinga language community. They were celebrating the publication of 5 New Testament books in their language. The books were Mark, Timothy 1&2, Titus, and Philemon. These will compliment Ruth and Jonah to make a total of 7 books of the Bible now...

UTB Celebrates it's 10-Year Anniversary
What a trip! We just finished two days of driving down the East African coast from Watamu, Kenya to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The purpose of our journey was to attend the Uganda-Tanzania Branch annual conference. This year marked a VERY special conference in that we celebrated 10 years of Bible Translation work in 32 different language communities! It was an awesome time with colleagues from all...

Translation Progress in Mbeya
I just read this in Helen Eaton’s newsletter this morning about the completion of Mark in 3 languages of the Mbeya Cluster Project… That’s an interesting looking photo on the right there! What is it? It’s the Malila translation of Mark! Or the “Good News of Jesus Christ, as written by Mark”, as it says on the front cover. As you can imagine, it was a very happy day when the boxes of...

Our first winter. My first igloo.
Okay, it’s not our first winter (Ranette and I) but it’s our family’s first winter seeing as Josiah and Isaac were both born in Tanzania. So this weekend when we went to visit my parents up north in Bancroft, I thought it would be a good opportunity for the boys to participate in a typical Canadian childhood pastime - building a snow fort! Unfortunately my built in need to turn...
